LAURA SCARDAMAGLIA

Associate Professor Laura Scardamaglia is a Consultant Dermatologist, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatology, and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. She is Head of Dermatology at Western Health, the Head of Paediatric Dermatology at Sunshine Hospital, the Clinical Leader of Dermatology and Head of Immunobullous and Vascular Anomalies clinics at the Royal Melbourne hospital, and Consultant Dermatologist at the Royal Children’s hospital in the dermatology clinical, laser and vascular anomalies departments.

Laura graduated from Medicine at the University of Melbourne in 1994, and prior to studying dermatology worked in paediatric and adult medicine, including a year as the Burnet Clinical Research Unit Immunology Registrar at the Walter and Eliza Hall and the Royal Melbourne hospital in 1999. That year she was awarded the Cleveland Young Investigator of the year for her research.

She completed her dermatology training in 2003 and was awarded the Travelling Fellowship by the Australasian College of Dermatology for being the most meritorious candidate in Australia. She furthered her training by attending Northwestern Hospital Dermatology in Chicago and University California San Francisco Dermatology in the United States, as well as Great Ormond Street and St Mary hospital in London.

She has been a Consultant Dermatologist since 2004 and is interested and practices in all areas of adult and paediatric medical, skin cancer and surgical dermatology, with particular sub-specialty interests in Complex Medical Dermatology, Immunobullous (blistering) diseases, Immunological Dermatology disorders, Connective Tissue Diseases, Vascular Anomalies, and Paediatric Dermatology. She established the paediatric service at Sunshine, the Adult Vascular Anomlies clinic and the Multidisciplinary Immunobullous clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and developed local protocols for the use of Sirolimus and Rituximab for these diseases.

She is a senior lecturer to medical students at the University of Melbourne, and committed and devoted to teaching and mentoring medical and dermatology trainees and colleagues alike. She in an invited speaker at local, national and international meetings and conferences, an invited reviewer of local and international journals, involved in clinical research, and well published in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. She is a Supervisor or Training and Clinical Supervisor for the Australasian College of Dermatologists, and was awarded a Presidential Citation in 2018.

Laura is dedicated to ensuring that patients from all walks of life are able to access expertise and best quality up-to-date care in dermatology in public and private practice. She practices holistic, compassionate and best evidence dermatology in her hospital clinics and private rooms in Footscray.

She welcomes all referrals from GPs and specialists, and although she doesn’t practice cosmetic dermatology, is happy to provide objective advice and guidance in this area and refer accordingly.
